FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Does DiscStation offer DIY video-to-DVD transfer solutions? Yes! See our full range of hardware and software options under the DIY Video to DVD section (see menu options left of screen) What is a DVD? DVD, or digital versatile disc, is a technology standard that stores data on optical discs. Like the CD (compact disc) that came before it, a DVD holds its information in a digital format as pits denoting ones and zeros on the surface of the disc. Why does DVD last longer than videotape? A DVD does not have the same storage problems as videotape and is therefore more durable. A DVD may last over 100 years whereas a VHS videotape will start to reduce in quality from the very first time it is played. VHS is susceptible to damage caused by humidity and temperature. The estimated life-span of a videotape is only 10-15 years long. What is all the fuss about DVD? A DVD movie is split up into chapters that allow you to jump freely between the different parts of the movie, the freeze frame is better than any video as there is no tape to "freeze". There is no such thing as tracking on a DVD player as the DVD will play exactly the same whether it's the first time or the hundredth time. You do not need to rewind the tape anymore and the clarity of the picture is second to none. How do I get the best results when transferring my VHS tapes? The quality you get will depend on the quality of the original recording. The process of conversion does not improve the quality of the video. It is best that, where possible, you find the original tape and not a copy of a copy. How can I save money? The price of the conversion process is based on how long the video is, so if you have the ability to edit out parts of the video that you do not require, then this will save you paying for the conversion of "dead" video. If you have a lots of videotape footage to be saved, then our DIY solutions are recommended. Why Convert to DVD? Videotape has a life-span of 10-15 years. Videotape is a fragile medium, subject to damage and deterioration from exposure to poor environmental conditions and in-adequate handling practices.
